Organisms studied
Toolik Limno Bay Methods:
1983 -Water samples were collected with a Van
Dorn Bottle or a pump.
1984 - 1986 Water samples were collected with a pump. A single, integrated water sample was collected by raising the pump at a steady rate from a depth of 5 m to the surface. . The integrated water sample was homogenized in a plastic bottle.

(all years LimnoBay method)
Water was filtered through 47 mm diameter glass fiber filters. Filters were dried, carbon and nitrogen were measured by combustion of filters in a Perkin Elmer CHN elemental analyzer. Phosphorus was measured by colorimetric analyses after extraction of phosphorus from filter with hot hydrochloric acid.

Notes: 1984 onward data were collected as reference samples for the limnocorral fertilization experiments. Method of collection was different from 1983 samples in that a single integrated water sample was
collected. Sampling depth of 1.0 m indicated in data file does not indicate actual sampling depth

Other Site methods:
Water samples were taken weekly from both sides of lake N-2. The sampling depths for the Control side were 0, 1, 3, 5, and 6 meters and the Treatment side were 0, 1, 3, 5, and 7 meters. Nutrients were analyzed using batch methods. SRP was measured using a non-extractive molybdate method (Strickland and Parsons 1969 and Wetzel and Likens 1979). Ammonia was measured by the phenate method (Wetzel and Likens 1979) and Nitrate/Nitrite using the cadmium reduction method. (Reference Citations: R.G. Wetzel & G.E. Likens. 1979. Limnological Methods. Saunders. Philadelphia.)

Water samples collected at designated sites and depths in the lakes were analyzed on the Technicon Autoanalyzer II using Technicon methods. In addition to the Standard series run at the beginning and end of each analysis 4 standards and a blank were run with each tray of samples.
Notes: These were all samples that were run by Gretchen Gettel throughout the summer
Particulate Phosphorus, nitrogen and carbon samples were collected on a pre-combusted 47 mm Gelman AE filter and stored frozen until processing, Filters were then split in half and particulate
phosphorus was determined using methods of Stainton et al., (1974).

Data Table

Variable Name Variable Description Data Type Units DateTime Format Code Information Missing Value Code
SortChem_# A unique number assigned to each sample collected at a specific site at a specific date and time. The year that the sample was collected is followed by a dash and then a sequential number.
