Methods:

The response of fish to fertilization was determined by monitoring adult grayling from control and fertilized river reaches. Adult and juvenile fish within a 1 km zone in each section were weighed, measured, tagged and released. In August, tagged fish were recaptured to measure growth of individual fish. Wet weights are in grams, and were taken after holding the fish for 24 hours. Length is total length, using the bottom lobe of the caudal fin.

Notes: Fish weirs were not constructed on the Kuparuk this year. Adult fish seemed to move very little, as they were recaptured in August very close to where they were released in July. This may have been due to extreme low water levels. Juvenile fish in the control zone did move; many were recaptured upstream of where they were released. All fish tagged in July were not recaptured in August, therefore final length and weight measurements were not obtained for all fish.

In July, juvenile fish were very abundant in the control zone. Only two were captured in the fertilized zone while the experiment was being set up. There were quite a few juveniles in the upper half of the fertilized section in August.
