Cover biomass
measurements used to estimate bryophyte biomass in the Kuparuk River.
Hygrohypnum and Schistidium were the only bryophytes harvested for this
measurement from the Kuparuk River's fertilized reach. Harvests were done in

In 1990 we observed increased abundance's of several species of aquatic bryophytes in the fertilized zone of the Kuparuk River relative to the reference. These bryophytes included, most notably, two species of Hygrohypnum, H. alpestre and H. ochraceum, Fontinalis neomexicana, and, to a lesser extent, Schistidium agassizii and the leafy liverwort Solenostoma. To substantiate these data, we utilized point transects in 1992 to estimate bryophyte coverage in the enriched and control zones. To estimate percent coverage, we normally completed 5 transects per riffle site. In order to estimate the total biomass of Hygrohypnum and Schistidium in the Kuparuk River we performed a biomass harvest which entailed harvesting these bryophytes from a known area at different coverage percentages. The result was a slide rule scale that could be used to determine the biomass of either species at differing percent covers.
We developed a relationship between percent benthic cover and biomass (gdw/m2) for both of the bryophyte species. Methods used to determine this relationship were reported in Bowden et al. (1994). A 0.25 m2 plot was selectively placed in a riffle at station +1.7, 2.0 or 4.0 km. The harvest occurred in the late summer (4-August), at peak seasonal biomass. All material collected was rinsed to remove detritus and invertebrates and then dried at 65 oC to a consistent weight. Dry mass of each species was recorded for each percent cover category. The harvested biomass was converted to a per meter value by multiplying by 4. Calculations: None Reference Citations: Bowden, W. B., J. C. Finlay, and P. E. Maloney. 1994.
