Methods:

Three mosses common in the P fertilized reach of
the Kuparuk River (Hygrohypnum spp., Schistidium agassizii, Fontinalis
neomexicana) were grown under control and P fertilized conditions in 1992
(methods described in 92BOMOGR.DOC, data in 92BOMOGR.DAT). Total phosphorus
and nitrogen concentrations in bryophyte clumps were determined from oven-
dried samples. Initial bryophyte stocks (collected July 5) and all clumps
from each treatment (control and fertilized, collected 8 August), were
combined by species and treatment. Pooled samples were ground in a Wiley Mill
to pass a #20 mesh. Triplicate 0.25 g subsamples were digested at 440 C with
sulfuric acid and hydrogen peroxide. Digested samples were diluted with
deionized water and analyzed for total phosphorus with an autoanalyser. Two
standard materials with well-known total phosphorus and nitrogen
concentrations (National Institute of Standards and Technology citrus leaves
and an internal laboratory standard material) were used to assure accuracy of
the analyses.
