Methods:

Nutrient concentrations in mosses (Hygrohypnum spp.
and Schistidium agassizii) were monitored in P fertilized riffles in the
Kuparuk River in 1995. Two samples per site were collected by combining 4-5
small clumps of each taxa from a 5 m^2 area in each riffle, rinsing
thoroughly, and drying to a constant weight at 65 C. Samples were ground in a
Wiley Mill to pass a #30 mesh and digested at 425 C with peroxide, potassium
sulfate, copper sulfate, and hydrochloric acid. Digested samples were diluted
with deionized water and analyzed for total phosphorus and nitrogen with an
autoanalyzer. National Institute of Standards and Technology peach leaves
were digested and analyzed to ensure the efficiency of digest and analytical
procedures.
