Conditions of Use

The re-use of scientific data has the potential to greatly increase communication, collaboration and synthesis within and among disciplines, and thus is fostered, supported and encouraged. Permission to use this dataset is granted to the Data User free of charge subject to the following terms:

1) Acceptable use. Use of the dataset will be restricted to academic, research, educational, government, recreational, or other not-for-profit professional purposes. The Data User is permitted to produce and distribute derived works from this dataset provided that they are released under the same license terms as those accompanying this Data Set. Any other uses for the Data Set or its derived products will require explicit permission from the dataset owner.
2 ) Redistribution. The data are provided for use by the Data User. The metadata and this license must accompany all copies made and be available to all users of this Data Set. The Data User will not redistribute the original Data Set beyond this collaboration sphere.
3 ) Citation. It is considered a matter of professional ethics to acknowledge the work of other scientists. Abstract:Quadrats (20cm x 20cm squares) along a line (block) were collected for plant biomass in mesic acidic tussock tundra. Each quadrat was separated into individual species, new and old aboveground and belowground biomass. The harvest occurred in early July to coincide with a 15N plant and soil harvest.

Methods:

Four to five quadrats (20cm x 20cm squares) located randomly along a line near each of four blocks of 15N plots were destructively measured for species biomass (g/m2) and net primary production (g m-2 yr-1). Harvest times, June 26-28 1992, August 8-13 1992 and 2-6 July 1993, coincided with the times of 15N plant and soil harvests (see McKane, et al).

Calculations: Units; Tissue mass data are expressed in g/quadrat (400 cm2). Multiply by 25 to get g/m2.

Sampling Description.

Quadrats, 20x20 cm, were collected and sorted into species and then into tissue type. Aboveground biomass is considered "within" the quadrat if it is associated with a meristem that is within the quadrat. Depending on the harvest, tissue types can be broad categories, i.e. above and below, or more detailed, i.e. inflorescences, new growth, old growth, belowground rhizomes, etc. In most cases only the only belowground tissues measured are rhizomes and stems. The samples are dried at 50-70 degrees C and weighed to the nearest milligram. Samples are returned to Woods Hole for nutrient analysis.
