| Methods: | The data presented here was obtained by determining species presence in a quadrat from data sheets completed during each harvest. The productivity and biomass data from those harvests is presented in other data files (83GSTTB7.XLS, 88GSSABM.XLS, 89GSTTBM.XLS, 94GSWSBM.XLS, 95GSTTBM.XLS, 96GSHTBM.XLS). 20 x 20 cm quadrats were harvested for plant biomass at peak season (late July-early August) each year listed. Five quadrats were harvested along a line transect within each block, except as noted below. Species presence in a plot was recorded at the time the quadrats were sorted to species, and is indicated in this dataset for aboveground vascular material only. The 1983, 1989, and 1995 tussock harvests were of 5 quadrats from 4 blocks; the tussock manipulations began in 1981. The 1988 harvest was of 5 quadrats in the willow community and 4 quadrats in each of the other communities, again from 4 blocks. The wet sedge harvest in 1994 was 4 quadrats from Toolik Lake (blocks 1 and 2; begun in 1989) and the Sag River (block 3; begun in 1985). The heath harvest in 1996 was of 5 quadrats from 3 blocks at Toolik Lake; the heath manipulations began in 1989. For detailed description of nutrient enrichments, greenhouses, and shade houses, see Chapin et al. 1995 and Shaver et al. in press. Notes: If a block or quadrat was not sampled at a given harvest, the total species count will be blank. A total species count of zero indicates no vascular plants were found aboveground in the harvest. Reference Citations: Chapin, F.S., III, G.R. Shaver, A.E. Giblin, K.J. Nadelhoffer, and J.A.
