Throughout the summer, several indices of primary productivity are
measured in control and enriched sections of each stream. One such
parameter is the concentration of chlorophyll a in the epilithic algae,
determined by periodically scrubbing streambed rocks at several stations
and measuring chlorophyll levels in the scrubbate. Dr. Breck Bowden is
the principal investigator in charge of epilithic chlorophyll
determination. Also, photosynthetic and respiratory rates of epilithic
algae (both rivers) and bryophytes (Kuparuk River) are measured. The
principal investigator in charge of these metabolic rates is Dr. Breck
Bowden. Bryophytes, particularly mosses, have become increasingly
important in the streams. Files containing photosynthetic and
respiratory rates of mosses are also presented here. Dr. Breck Bowden
is the principal investigator for the bryophyte studies.
The menu below provides a complete list of the files on epilithic
chlorophyll biomass and primary producer metabolism. Consult the brief
descriptor following each file name for the information contained in
each file. Clicking on a file name will send you to a document file
that describes the method in which the data were collected; from the
document file, you can access the data file by clicking on the hypertext
data file name.
-
1983_current_pekchl - Sestonic and epilithic chlorophyll for the Kuparuk River during the summers of 1983 - 2009. Water was filtered and rocks from designated locations on the Kuparuk River were scrubbed for epilithic algae approximately three times each summer. Station sites are relative distance from the original 1983 phosphorus dripper. Stations include sites in a reference reach, a reach that has been recovering from phosphorus addition since 1996, and a reach that has had phosphorus added since 1983. Phosphoric acid is added to the stream to increase the soluble reactive phosphorus by 0.32 uM. Sampling dates are typically once in June prior to the addition of phosphoric acid and once each in July and August.

1990_current_peochl - Sestonic and epilithic chlorophyll for the Oksrukuyik Creek during the summers of 1990 - 2009. Water was filtered and rocks from designated locations on the Oksrukuyik Creek were scrubbed for epilithic algae approximately three times each summer. Sampling formerly included stations in the fertilized and reference reaches. Current sampling stations are in the reference reach of the stream, upstream of the point of phosphorus addition that occurred from 1991-1996. Sampling dates are typically once in each June, July, and August.

1993_to_current_mopt_kup - This file contains the consolidated data for percent cover of dominant bryophytes and other easily identifiable macro-algae in the experimental reaches of the Kuparuk River beginning in 1993 and updated annually. In some years percent cover was recorded more than one time per season. In all years percent cover was recorded in riffle habitats and in some (early) years percent cover was recorded for pool habitats. This file will be updated periodically with new data as it is acquired. The current date range is as indicated in the file name.

89_96bometa - Epilithic respiration, photosynthesis, chlorophyll a and nutrients from light/dark benthic metabolism chamber experiments. Samples were collected from stations within the CONTROL, +P, and +NP zones of the Kuparuk River during the +P and +NP experiments run during 1989 - 1996.
-
92bomocb - Cover biomass measurements used to estimate bryophyte biomass in the Kuparuk River. Hygrohypnum and Schistidium were the only bryophytes harvested for this measurement from the Kuparuk River's fertilized reach. Harvests were done in August
-
92bomogr - Bryophyte growth data from the Kuparuk River. We measured growth of Hygrohypnum spp. and Fontinalis neomexicana clumps and stem tips in control and fertilized (PO4 phosphorus), pools and riffles.
-
92bomont - Bryophyte (Hygrohypnum, Schistidium, and Fontinalis) tissue phosphorus and nitrogen concentrations in control and phosphorus fertilized reaches of the Kuparuk River in 1992.
-
92bomopt - Point transects used to estimate epilithic bryophyte and macroalgal cover of the Kuparuk River. Hygrohypnum, Fontinalis, and Schistidium were the dominant bryophytes encountered. Transects were done July (early) and July and August (late) in both fertilized (phosphorus-enriched) and control riffles of the Kuparuk.
