<para>Time series of nutrient grab samples collected by hand (i.e. not with the Sigma autosampler) with frequency ranging from weekly to monthly between 2001 and 2009 Sites include three headwater catchments of contrasting land use (forest, urban, wetland), and the mouth of the two main watersheds draining to the Plum Island Estuary (Ipswich and Parker R.). An additional time series was collected for a site in the Upper Ipswich at North Reading and at Fish Br. in Boxford – this sampling was ended in 2002. All Samples were analysed for NO3, NO2, NH4, PO4, TDN and DOC. Si was analyzed until 2002. Particulates and TSS have been analyzed since 2006.</para>

Samples were originally kept cold until filtered within several days of collection, and since 2002 have been filtered immediately in the field. Filtered samples were frozen until analysis. Particulate samples are filtered in the lab using vacuum filtration., and TSS is calculated from the mass of particulates per volume of sample. Particulate C and N mass was calculated by analyzing the filters using a CHN analyzer, and converted to concentration by dividing by the filtered volume. Analysis was conducted at UNH either by the lab of Ted Loder (samples with grid-code = UNH_Grab) at MBL (grid-code = Sigma Grab and Lab_ID = NA) or at UNH by the lab of Bill McDowell (grid-code = Sigma Grab and Lab_ID = McDowell Lab). Samples analyzed at the McDowell Lab below the detection limit were entered as 0. The detection limit is 5 µg/L for NH4 (0.36 µM) , PO4 (0.16 µM) and NO3 (0.36 µM).

Samples were analysed using Lachat methods.

RESEARCH LOCATION: x and y coordinates given below are in MA State Plane NAD83 (meters). Sites were georeferenced to a gridded river network with 120m grid sizes. X and Y coordinates reflect slight shifts to ensure proper placement on the digital river network. Contributing area is listed in km2

          <literalLayout>
The Plum Island Ecosystems (PIE) LTER is an integrated research, education and outreach program whose goal is to develop a predictive understanding of the long-term response of watershed and estuarine ecosystems at the land-sea interface to changes in climate, land use and sea level. The principal study site is the Plum Island Sound estuary, its coupled Parker, Rowley and Ipswich River watersheds and the adjacent coastal ocean, the Gulf of Maine. The PIE LTER focuses on how several aspects of global change influence organic matter and inorganic nutrient biogeochemistry and estuarine foodwebs. The inputs of organic matter and nutrients from land, ocean and marshes interact with the external drivers (climate, land use, river discharge, sea level) to dictate the extent and degree of nutrient and organic matter processing and determine the spatial patterns of estuarine productivity and trophic structure.

            <geographicDescription>The Plum Island Ecosystems (PIE) LTER site, is located in northeastern Massachusetts, 42.72 N, 70.85 W. The PIE LTER lies at the interface of a thinly soiled, formerly glaciated New England land mass and the highly productive Gulf of Maine. Three watersheds comprise the estuarine drainage basin: Parker (155 km2), Rowley (26 km2) and Ipswich (404 km2). The Ipswich River watershed is highly urbanized with Boston "bedroom" communities encroaching in the headwater region while the Parker is less urbanized and retains a higher proportion of forest.</geographicDescription>
