EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN AND METHODS:
Relative elevation of the sites were determined by near-simultaneous water depth measurement at slack high tide. Vegetation biomass and density were measured at each station by clipping all vegetation within duplicate quadrats (0.25 m2 for alterniflora, 0.1 m2 for patens), and counting and weighing the stems. Maximum vegetation height was measured in the field. Marsh sediment cores were obtained for sediment characteristics. Sediment NH4 was determined by a KCl extraction (see ANALYTICAL METHODS). Sediment bulk density was determined by dry weight of a known volume of sediment. Sediment organic matter was measured by weight loss on combustion of sediment to 500 ° C.
