Research Statement
Microbial ecology has until recently been a process-oriented discipline. The development of molecular methods now allows the identification and phylogentic analysis of bacteria from natural environments, most of whom are presumably non-culturable. I'm specifically interested in surveying the diversity of bacteria within Toolik Lake, Alaska, a Long Term Ecological Research site. Identification of cell types would allow us to make use of the physiological information available from laboratory studies of closely related species and to compare populations from other environments. We've begun to develop molecular probes to track microbial activity and succession, with the ultimate goal of understanding the transformation of carbon within this ecosystem.
