Methods:

Water, physics and chemistry sampled weekly from central station the main station on Toolik Lake

Temperature and conductivity were read by the YSI model 33, conductivity meter. Dissolved O2 and Temperature were read by YSI model 57 oxygen meter, air calibrated. Surface and underwater light transmission were read using LICOR digital light meter. Carbonate alkalinity was titrated against pH depending on expected alkalinity (see Wetzel and Likens 1979). pH was measured electrometrically with a Corning portable expanded standard pH buffer and corrected for temperature of sample. A measure of carbon-12 available for alkalinity from alkalinity form tables in Wetzel and Likens (1979). Color at 885 quantified with a Coleman single beam spectrophotometer (5cm light path), calibrated each run with external standard series to encompass the range of values anticipated (n=5 or 6 x duplicates/samples).
