TAXONOMIC COVERAGE:
Organisms studied

Methods:Samples were taken with a

Van Dorn bottle, emptied into a bucket, and 2 to 2.5 l was

gently reverse-flow concentrated through a 20 um Nitex net.

A final volume of 60 ml was preserved with glutaraldehyde

to a final concentration of 1%. All samples were stored

refrigerated until direct counting according to the method

of Baldock (1989). Briefly, 5 - 15 ml was stained with

Rose Bengal, drawn onto an 8.0 um pore cellulose acetate

filter, mounted in 47% sucrose solution and the entire

filter surface examined at 100x to 400x magnification.

Individual protozoans and rotifers were identified to

finest practical taxanomic level; nauplii were simply

enumerated.
Notes: This file is currently incomplete: data for other lakes is yet to be added.

Sampling Description.
Sampling locations are designated by the
lake sitecode numbers. All samples were taken at the "main"
station - that normally used for synoptic sampling of
nutrients, zooplankton etc. For lakes where samples are not
routinely taken, samples were taken from the deepest
known location in the lake.

All Biomass values are calculated based on measured biovolumes in preserved samples and literature conversion values from biovolume to carbon. For protozoans, individuals are placed into size categories, and a mean biovolume is then estimated by appropriate geometric formulas for volumes of a cone or sphere. Protozoan biovolume is converted to protozoan biomass using a conversion factor of 0.14 pg C æm-3 (Putt and Stoecker 1989). For individuals of each species were derived from direct measurements of dimensions and appropriate conversion factors to biomass derived from Ruttner-Kolisko (1977), Makarewicz and Likens (1979), and Pauli (1989).
