Methods:

In 1990 we observed increased abundance's of
several species of aquatic bryophytes in the fertilized zone of the Kuparuk
River relative to the control. These bryophytes included, most notably, two
species of Hygrohypnum, H. alpestre and H. ochraceum, and, to a lesser extent,
Fontinalis neomexicana, Schistidium agassizii and the leafy liverwort
Solenostoma. Bryophyte biomass collections from random quadrats in control
and phosphorus-enriched zones of the Kuparuk River in 1990 and 1991 indicated
that there were 17+/-9 g dry mass per meter squared in the control zone and
322+/-96 g in the enriched zone (+/-SE, N = 5). We utilized point transects
in 1992 and 1993 to estimate bryophyte coverage in the enriched and control
zones (see 92BOMOPT AND 93BOMOPT .DOC AND .DAT). These data suggested that
the increase in bryophyte biomass was confined to fertilized riffles of the
river. To substantiate these data, we examined bryophyte growth in the river
using clumps of Hygrohypnum spp. transplanted from fertilized riffles to
control and fertilized, pools and riffles. We affixed clumps of Hygrohypnum
(0.5 to 1.5 g initial weight, towel-dried) to wooden boards with Velcro strips
and staked them to the stream bottom so the bryophytes were exposed to a
natural flow regime. All bryophytes were initially free of visible detritus
and periphyton. Bryophytes were placed in the stream in late June, and were
collected and re-weighed on 8 August after 44 days of manipulation.

Notes: Clump weights were initially
unequal so changes in weight were expressed as percent change from initial
values.
