Methods:

Stage height measurements were
taken with a Stevens chart recorder and also with a measuring
stick placed on the upstream side of the two culverts. Readings
on the measuring stick are in centimeters from the bottom of the
river to the water surface.
Discharge calibration measurements were taken at 60% of depth
at 20-30 points along a cross sectional transect of the river,
10 meters downstream of the culverts. Measurements were made using
both Marsh-McBirney and Teledyne-Gurley flow meters. Raw data
from the calibration measurements are available.

Notes: Once again we have had to calculate a new rating curve to
determine discharge for the season. The standpipe from '91
was washed out in the early June high water, one of the
culverts was badly damaged and the stream morphology was altered
by erosion and sediments from the road wash out. A new standpipe
was installed in late June but was washed out on the 1st of July.
A second standpipe was installed on the 4th of July. Normally we
would use the datalogger to supply missing stage height data
but this was not possible this year. The pressure transducer was
washed downstream to some unknown location in the early June
flood. The datalogger itself disappeared in the August 26 flood,
with a good deal of data on it that had not yet been collected.

Discharge was calculated for six stage height readings a day,
taken at four hour intervals. On several days there is missing
stage height data which means that average stage height for
these days is not accurately represented. These days are as
follows:
June 27 Only 1 reading - 1600 AST
, June 28 No readings
June 29 No reading at 0000 and 0400
July 1 No reading at 2000
July 2 Only 1 reading - 1000
July 3 Only 2 readings - 0930 and 1200
July 4 No reading at 0000 and 0400
Aug 14 No reading at 1600 and 2000
Aug 15 Only 2 readings - 1600 and 2000

Breck Bowden did some surveying at the Kuparuk road crossing this
year to help us establish permanent reference marks. Hopefully
this will help to give us better year to year continuity.
