Each week throughout the summer, the concentrations of phosphorus,
nitrate, and ammonium are measured at several stations in control and
nutrient-enriched sections of each stream. In some years, these
nutrients have also been measured in the hyporheic zones of the Kuparuk
River and the New Reach streams. These measurements are done by an
autoanalyzer and often by manual chemistry. Note that the analytical
chemistry methods changed over the years. Data is compiled into a single
file for multiple years if the methods remained the same.
The principal investigators in charge of the nutrient measurements are
Drs. Bruce Peterson, Mike Miller and Breck Bowden.
The menu below provides a complete list of sestonic and hyporheic
nutrient files. Consult the brief descriptor following each file name
for the information contained in each file. Clicking on a file name
will send you to a document file that describes the method in which the
data were collected; from the document file, you can access the data
file by clicking on the hypertext data file name.

1990-currentpeknut - Samples from designated stations from the Kuparuk River were collected during each summer from 2000 to current time. Station sites are relative distance from the original 1983 phosphorus dripper. Stations include sites in a reference reach, a reach that has been recovering from phosphorus addition since 1996, and a reach that has had phosphorus added since 1983. Phosphoric acid is added to the stream to increase the soluble reactive phosphorus by 0.32 uM. Three sampling dates occurred each summer; once in June prior to the start of fertilization and once each in July and August. Water samples were analyzed for soluble reactive phosphate, ammonium, and nitrate.
-
2000-currentpeonut - Samples from designated stations from Oksrukuyik Creek were collected during each summer from 2003 to current time. Sampling stations are in the reference reach of the stream, upstream of the point of phosphorus addition that occurred from 1991-1996. Nutrients analyzed by manual chemistry from Oksrukuyik Creek during the summer of 2003 to current time. Three sampling dates occurred each summer; once each in June, July, and August. Water samples were analyzed for soluble reactive phosphate, ammonium, and nitrate.
