The Conte Research Group

Who we are...
Dr. Maureen Conte (C.V.) is an associate scientist at the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences and an adjunct scientist at The Ecosystems Center at the Marine Biological Laboratory. She is also an adjunct professor in Brown University’s Department of Geological Sciences. Originally calling Georgia home, Maureen received her B.A. in Geography & Environmental Engineering from Maryland’s John Hopkins University. Her Ph.D. thesis investigated the biogeochemistry of particulate lipids in warm-core gulf stream ring systems and was awarded by Columbia University. She spent five years working in the North Atlantic as a postdoc and research fellow at the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom before coming to Woods Hole, taking the helm of the Oceanic Flux Program time-series in 1994.
JC Weber (C.V.) has been Maureen’s research associate since 1996 and is currently based at MBL’s Ecosystems Center. Originally from western PA, he got his B.S. in Marine & Freshwater Biology from the University of New Hampshire in 1993. During that time, he had the opportunity to partake in a range of biogeochemical research working in a diversity of ecosystems from New England salt marshes to the Antarctic dry valleys. He received his M.S. in Marine Science from the University of Delaware in 1995, investigating the cues (tactile and biochemical) triggering settlement and metamorphosis in mud crab larvae.
Over the years, our research group has been greatly enhanced (both with intellect and personality!) by the addition of students and individuals comprised of high school students just beginning to explore their interests in science, undergraduates building upon their base of scientific knowledge and contributing to our research endeavors with independent projects as part of the National Science Foundation’s Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program, and with post-graduate students who have enhanced our group contributing their areas of expertise.
