EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN AND METHODS: Benthic chlorophyll samples colleted using a core taken to 1 cm in depth. Two replicate samples taken for each creek/branch/transect/habitat. Samples frozen and analyzed later in laboratory.
NOTES AND COMMENTS:
VARIABLE DESCRIPTION:SW and WE creek were the nutrient addition manipulation, right branches of all creeks were fish removal manipulation

CALCULATIONS: Chlorophyll and phaeophytins measured using a spectrophotometer. Extractions from sediment made with 100% acetone, 12 hour soak time.
Chl A (ug/cc) =( (26.7 (665o – 665a) (v)) / (V)(L)
Phaeophytins (ug/cc) = (26.7((1.7 (665a)) – (665o)(v)) / (V)(L)
665o = turbidity corrected extinction at 665 nm before acidification
665a = turbidity corrected extinction at 665 nm after acidification
v = volume in ml of acetone during extraction, incl. mgCO3
V = volume inn cc of sediment extracted
26.7 = constant related to the specific absorbance of chl a
1.7 = ratio of the absorbance of pure chl a to the absorbance of an equivalent amount of
phaeophytin ( here chlorophyll is degraded by HCl)
